Hillside Ranch Net-Zero House
Location: Poway, CA

Conceived in 2015 and completed in 2018, the project was developed as a design-build endeavor. As the architect, owner, and builder, I searched for a south-facing hillside property that offered scenic views alongside a protective buffer for wildfire safety. My goal was to create a passive-design, net-zero ranch home with a modern twist.

The south-facing trellis was designed to support 26 solar PV panels - avoiding roof penetrations while simplifying maintenance. This structure blocks summer solar heat gain while allowing lower-angle winter sunlight to warm the exposed concrete floors, which act as thermal mass. Maximizing the building envelope's insulation proved to be an excellent investment, and the home has maintained its net-zero status ever since.
