<p>Conceived in 2015 and completed in 2018, the project was developed as a design-build endeavor. As the architect, owner, and builder, I searched for a south-facing hillside property that offered scenic views alongside a protective buffer for wildfire safety. My goal was to create a passive-design, net-zero ranch home with a modern twist.</p><p>The south-facing trellis was designed to support 26 solar PV panels - avoiding roof penetrations while simplifying maintenance. This structure blocks summer solar heat gain while allowing lower-angle winter sunlight to warm the exposed concrete floors, which act as thermal mass. Maximizing the building envelope&apos;s insulation proved to be an excellent investment, and the home has maintained its net-zero status ever since.</p>
